Irish Abbeys & Monastic Sites

Innisfallen Island - take a boat from Ross Castle and visit this very special island to see the impressive archaeological remains of this impressive monastery dating from early Christian times. The monastery was founded in the 7th century.

Over a period of 300 years the Annals of Innisfallen were written which chronicle the early history of Ireland as it was known to the monks. Today they are housed in the Bodleian Library in Oxford in controlled atmosphere conditions.

Brian Boru a High King and Thomas Moore were educated here. Guided tours of the island and monastery are free .

Muckross Abbey - a short walk from Coolclogher House - is one of the major ecclesiastical sites in Kerry and took 50 years to build, being completed in 1448.It has had a violent history, and has been damaged and reconstructed many times. Today the Abbey is largely roofless, although apart from this is generally quite well preserved. Its most striking feature is a central courtyard which contains a large yew tree and is surrounded by a vaulted cloister.
